Uttar Pradesh assembly passes UPCOCA bill: The Uttar Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act (UPCOCA) bill was passed by the state assembly on Wednesday.
He told the House that the proposed law would come in handy in controlling crime and reigning in criminals, mafias and land grabbers.
After a brief debate, the bill was passed by the Vidhan Sabha and would now go to the Upper House -- Vidhan Parishad.
The bill was presented by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who also holds the charge of the Home Department.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav echoed similar sentiments and said the proposed law was not in the interests of the state while also apprehending its misuse.

The lawyers also pointed out that the Jamadar family had used the Jaysthambh land for cultivation and other commercial purpose, which was illegal and against the sanad.
Passing an oral order, Joint Civil Judge C P Bhagwat told the Jamadar family that their application has been rejected, and mentioned that they do not hold possession of the land.
The Samiti demanded that the Jamadar (Malvadkar) family’s name be removed from the 7/12 extract, the ‘encroachments’ done by them be cleared and action taken to prevent further encroachments.
All three claim to be heirs of Kandojibin Gajoji Jamadar (Malvadkar), a havaldar in British Army who fought the battle of Bhima Koregaon in 1818, in which the British had defeated the Peshwas.

Dalit woman gang-raped by youths in movie theatre, two arrested: Meerut: A 27-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped by two youths in a theatre at Mawana here on Tuesday evening.
The two men then allegedly gang-raped the woman inside the movie hall.The rape survivor then approached the police station with her complaint.
Police claimed that the rape survivor had accompanied a youth she knew and was gang-raped by the latter and his friend who showed up later.
Amiruddin befriended her, by allegedly pretending to be Amar, and they started a relationship.Amirrudin took her out for a movie at Kamal Theatre in Mawana here on Tuesday afternoon at about 3 pm.
Police arrested two youths — Amiruddin and Wasim — from Mawana bus stand on Tuesday.Police also alleged that the main accused, Amiruddin, befriended the rape survivor on a fake identity, Amar, following which fringe right-wing groups demanded action alleging it to be a case of 'love jihad'.
